Hertfordshire Win the Inter County Masters Championship

Hertfordshire won of the East Region heat of the 2011 ASA Masters & Seniors Inter-County team competition held at Newmarket Leisure Centre on Sunday 20th November.

The competition again saw all six Counties from the East Region competing for our own Trophy locally and, once all the regions in the country submit their results, against all counties nationwide.

As last year, when Hertfordshire just snatched the trophy from Essex in the last couple of races, it proved to be a very close gala.   Hertfordshire were determined to defend their title as they took an early lead but Norfolk chased them all the way with Essex not far behind.  Hertfordshire Team Manager Richard Sumner, mindful of what happened the previous year, was extremely nervous as the gala progressed but in the end Hertfordshire pulled away to take the trophy with Norfolk taking the runners up shield ahead of Essex.

Seven East Region records fell with Chris Dunn of Hertfordshire taking three in the 65/69 year age group, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle & 50m backstroke. Two other records fell to Hertfordshire swimmers, John Cunningham 40/45 year 50m butterfly and Annette Thatcher 55/59 year 50m freestyle.  Ashley Pattison of Norfolk broke the 18/24 year 50m backstroke record while Alan Canham of Essex achieved his record in the 70/74 year 50m breaststroke.

Final points were:

1st Hertfordshire 289, 2nd Norfolk 266, 3rd Essex 248, 4th Bedfordshire 238, 5th Cambridgeshire 196, 6th Suffolk 170.
